Colourful Spring Forest Birch and Aspen Tree Painting by Contemporary Abstract Landscape Artist Melissa McKinnon
This spring forest painting, “New Awakening”, is all about new beginnings and a fresh start. The forest is starting to come alive after a long winter’s sleep. Spring is a time of rebirth, growth and vitality in nature. From darkness into light, we see the new buds of vibrant green leaves starting to emerge and reach up towards the warm spring sun.
This painting is full of vibrant colours and thick textured paint.
Ranging from dark sea blues and turquoise to the fresh emerald and lime greens highlighted with a bits of shimmery golds and yellows, this painting is full of positive energy and life!
I apply the paint to canvas using a variety of palette knives in an impasto style painting technique. This allows me to create layers and layers…(and layers!) of leaves giving the painting a realistic and three dimensional. The leaves and tree bark are literally ‘sculpted’ onto the canvas.
The colours in the painting and appearance of the forest change throughout day depending on the brightness and quality of light hitting the surface of the painting. In bright, mid-day sun the forest is alive and vibrantly coloured as if on a warm spring afternoon. In the evening, once the sun has set and the painting is illuminated only by the soft glow of tungsten lightbulbs inside the home, the painting appears quiet and calm as if we are on an evening stroll through the woods.
