This painting was an absolute joy to create!
It’s part of a new series of abstract landscape paintings which explores the beauty of the Southern Alberta landscape. As a native Calgarian, I’ve spent my lifetime studying and enjoying this view – the vast prairies, the majestic Rocky Mountains and of course, the big, beautiful, ever-changing Alberta sky.
As a special gift to celebrate a milestone birthday, my collector wanted a special painting that reminded her of home in Alberta.
When she saw it, she fell in love. She said it captured the beauty, colour and vitality of our unique landscape but with an exciting abstract interpretation. It was a perfect fit!
The texture in this painting is unreal!
Layers, and layers and layers of paint and colour were added to achieve a three dimensional, sculpted interpretation of the terrain.
To create my contemporary landscapes, I sculpt and mould the paint using a variety of palette knives to apply the paint directly onto the canvas, creating a thick texture that can be felt as well as seen. The paint itself, up to one inch thick, becomes a landscape that can be experienced and traveled by touch. Thereby, making the painting come alive on the canvas, engaging the viewer and inviting them into the beautiful world I’ve created.
Some of my favourite moments in this painting are in the sky. I love the contrast between the soft, subtle, multi-coloured blends with bold, thick and chunky impasto marks!
And this… this is my favourite moment in the painting. I love the energy and freedom of those swooshing brush marks contrasted with the thick and deliberate masses of cloud!
