I absolutely LOVE the colour palette in these two paintings! The vibrant greens, turquoise and blues are fresh, calming and serene.
I am excited by colour and texture and I love to push the limits of both in my paintings.
There are so many layers and shades of colour throughout this painting – from deep, velvety indigo blues to bright lime and chartreuse – which creates a wonderful depth in the leafy foliage. Each stroke is slightly different and no two marks are the same!
I apply the paint to the canvas using a variety of palette knives and an impasto technique. I sculpt and mould the paint so it becomes a three dimensional representation of the subject I’m painting. Some areas of my artwork are up to one inch thick!
The tree trunks are so thick and layered with paint that they actually feel like real bark.
This painting was inspired by Lake Louise, Banff National Park, Alberta – one of my favourite places in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
If you have ever had the pleasure of experiencing Lake Louise in person you will agree that the view is absolutely incredible. The mountains are immense and majestic, unlike anywhere else in the world. The lake water is crystal clear turquoise blue and sparkles like diamonds.
I wanted to share that experience in my painting – the thick chunky textured rocks and mountains are contrasted by the smooth shiny surface of the lake. You can feel the difference just as well as you can see it.
