Let me tell you a little about the woman who inspired this painting:  My Grandma.

My Grandma is and always will be one of the most important women in my life – someone to be admired and respected. She is strong, smart and funnier than most comedians. She is a WWII veteran of the British Army. She raised 5 wild and crazy kids (including my Dad) as a young widow. She is the sweetest and most loving Grandma that I could have ever wished for.

My Grandma also has Alzheimer’s.

I don’t remember when the symptoms first started,  but over the years her condition worsened and it became more and more difficult to hold a conversation. She now lives in a long term care facility because it’s not safe for her to be alone. When I go to visit her she often doesn’t recognize me and sometimes confuses me with one of my aunts. My Grandma never remembers my daughters, but every time she sees them she falls in love with them as if for the very first time.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that interferes with memory, thinking and behaviour. Symptoms can become severe and often interfere with daily tasks. Currently, there is no cure.

I am honoured to be the Featured Artist for the 2014 Hearts and Art for Alzheimer’s Annual Charity Art Auction and Fundraiser Gala.

I created this painting specifically for this event and I have dedicated it to my Grandmother, Patricia. The title, “In This Moment” represents the wide spectrum of emotions and experiences of caring for a loved one suffering with Alzheimer’s. “In This Moment” captures the time we have in the present with our loved ones – which is the only moment that matters because with someone with Alzheimer’s memories are fleeting.

By donating this painting, I hope to raise a TON of money for the Alzheimer’s Society, so in turn, they can do what they do best and help those affected by this terrible disease. With every $20 donation to the Hearts and Art for Alzheimer’s 2014 Fundraiser you will receive a raffle ticket and the chance to own this original painting.

Raffle tickets are $20 and available for purchase by filling out the form at the TOP OF THIS PAGE.

About Alzheimer’s disease:

Today, 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, with this number expected to increase to 1.4 million in less than 20 years. Although Canada’s aging demographic will continue to fuel these numbers, increasingly people in their 40s and 50s are also being affected. Growing evidence also shows that brain changes resulting in dementia can begin 25 years before symptoms appear. About the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories The Alzheimer Society of Alberta & NWT is working to change the face of dementia in Alberta and improve the quality of life for those with the disease. The Society educates supports and advocates for those with dementia and their care partners and promotes research into effective treatments and finding a cure for this debilitating disease. Until a cure is found, we are here to help.

  1. I have to say that I am surprised, overwhelmed and TRULY TOUCHED at the overwhelming number of emails that I received in less than 24 hours! THANK YOU!

Together, we are raising a TON of money for Alzheimer’s research and more importantly to me, we are spreading awareness of this heartbreaking disease.

I am amazed at how many of you have shared your experiences with Alzheimer’s and how it has affected your family and loved ones. I empathize and can relate to everyone who has gone or is currently going through a similar experience.

Thank you for your vulnerability and your support. ❤

Please "SHARE" and "LIKE" this post with your friends and family. The more people who see it means the more awareness and money we can raise to find a cure!

(To those who have submitted requests to purchase raffle tickets – please be patient as I process each one myself 🙂
