“From Where We Come”” 48″x36” Acrylic Painting on Canvas

This painting was commissioned by a local Calgary collector. She loved my existing painting “A Beautiful Mess” but chose to commission a custom painting to make it a personal experience.

We worked closely together to establish the inspiration for this painting and how best to communicate her ideas visually. The colours would remain similar to “A Beautiful Mess” but she wanted the number and placement of the trees in her painting to represent the members of her family. The two largest trees in the centre represent her parents standing tall and proud with their branches reaching out, encompassing all of their children and grandchildren.

This painting is a beautiful tribute to the memory of her late Father.

My collectors tell me that commissioning a painting is  a very unique and surprisingly personal way to experience art collecting. What they may not know is that my experience working with them is also very personal and rewarding. I love getting to know my collectors, learning about what attracted them to my artwork in the first place, working with them to identify their inspiration and how they want to feel when they look at their custom painting once it’s finished. I am inspired by their ideas and excited by the challenge of expressing them in a painted image as seen through my eyes and artistic style.

I view every commission as a collaboration with my collector. They are very special to me because I know how important these paintings are to them. These commissioned paintings are likely to be the ones passed down from generation to generation often becoming part of their family history. How cool is that!?

I have real love and appreciation for this painting, both symbolically and aesthetically. I feel like there are moments of spontaneous magic all throughout. I love how opposing colours were juxtaposed on the palette knife to create these beautiful and energetic marks, like little exclamation points that guide the viewer in and around the painting. These small moments are the things that make my heart beat faster and excite me as an artist.

What are the things that excite you most when looking at a beautiful piece of art?
