Stuck in a rut? Paint something totally different and wildly fun, like an abstract flower painting!

As a wife and mother of two little ones it’s an amazing gift when I can carve out enough time to paint every day for a long stretch, however sometimes I feel that my painting can become tight and too controlled. When this happens I find that taking a break to create something totally different and just for fun is the exact thing I need to return to my original painting with carefree abandon and fresh eyes. Here is my latest creation, painted with ink, salt, and acrylic paint.

The 3 Stages of My Love Affair with Painting

I have a love / hate relationship with each and every one of my paintings. It’s a vicious circle and this is what it looks like:

LUST

Like all new relationships, my love affair with a blank canvas begins with excitement, butterflies in my stomach and limitless fantasies of how wonderful our future will be. The lust stage. It’s the feeling that nothing this special or profound has ever existed before. This love (the new painting) will be unlike all the others that have come before it.

This lasts until I get to the point where I absolutely hate the piece that I am working on and I convince myself that I have ruined it beyond all hope. This happens every time.

This is when my painting and I take a break. Sometimes our break-up lasts overnight and sometimes for several weeks.

But like a moth to a flame we always reunite.

LOVE

Inspired and excited once again, we join in passion and creativity. There are always challenges, but we persevere and learn to work through them. This is the trust building, love stage.

COMMITMENT

Nonetheless, there comes a point when the painting is almost finished and I find myself holding back, hesitant to put paint to canvas. This is the commitment (or fear of commitment) stage. The point when you have to make a decision; flake out and give-up or to plunge in headfirst and just go for it. It’s always scary at first, but once I commit, it’s incredible, and it’s like the painting completes itself. From that moment on I am forever in love with that painting.

I am currently working on 5 new paintings for the new year and I am in a different stage of love with each one…and I’m loving every minute!

“I have no fear of making changes, destroying the image, etc., because the painting has a life of its own.” – Jackson Pollock

“Little Seeds” Original Acrylic Aspen / Birch Tree Acrylic Painting by Canadian Artist Melissa McKinnon

"Little Seeds" 48 x 60 Acrylic on Canvas

“Little Seeds” 48 x 60 Acrylic on Canvas

My children are my greatest creations and the source of my biggest inspiration.

They both have big personalities and how they interact with the world around them is unique and very different from each other. It’s amazing to watch them grow and change. I often think of them as little seedlings, changing with the seasons, getting taller, stronger, standing firm for what they believe in (even if it is the fact that Isabella does not like eggs and Valentina insists on wearing every single hair clip that we own – at the same time!). But most inspiring to me is that they are reaching for their dreams, nothing is out of reach for them.

Everything is fresh and new. The whole world “sparkles”, according to Isabella.

With a 50% mixture of gold mica paint added to some of the colors, I was able to make this painting sparkle too.

My two girls, my two trees and our big beautiful sparkly world.

“There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One is roots; the other, wings.”- Hodding Carter

One Of My Biggest Fans

My little girl admiring my big birch tree painting titled, “Tonight I Dream In Color”

Meet Valentina, my one year old daughter. She is a sweet, chubby, little firecracker, full of emotion.

This is her favorite painting. Every time she walks by it, she says, “Wow, Mommy painting!”. As a Mother and an artist, I couldn’t ask for more validation than that.

To meet her big sister Isabella and see how her crazy outfits help to inspire the colors I choose for my paintings, see this post.

All things in this world must be seen with youthful, hopeful eyes.

How To Paint Poppy Flowers with Acrylic Paint and a Palette Knife, Simple Step-By-Step Tutorial.

How To Paint Poppy Flowers with Acrylic Paint and a Palette Knife, Simple Step-By-Step Tutorial.

I have had several people ask about my painting process and I thought I’d share it on my blog. I love to paint with bold color and thick impasto texture. Impasto painting is defined as “a way of applying paint, specifically a thick, textured application of paint where the marks made by the brush or painting knife stay visible”. In order to achieve this effect, you must thicken your paint.

I use a combination of acrylic paint and a heavy body acrylic gloss gel medium, approximately a 50-50 ratio. The gel medium thickens the paint allowing me to sculpt it onto the canvas using a series of palette knives creating a thick texture that is characteristic of my work. It mixes well with all colors and gives the paint a glossy sheen. Matte gel is also available but will give your painting a dull, matte finish.

How I created my newest poppy series of paintings, step-by-step:

The fist layer of paint is applied straight out of the tube with out the gel medium.

Next I mix gel medium with titanium white and apply in thick layers to create cloud shapes across the sky.

Next I load my palette knife and with broad gestural strokes apply the paint thickly to give the impression of a grassy field. I tend to work quickly building up the foreground in multiple layers from dark to light and cool to warm to create depth and variety in the painting. Here are the first few layers of color:

Now the fun part, painting the poppy flowers. I use a combination of straight edge and round palette knives to sculpt the poppy flowers, pushing and pulling the paint to create texture and form. My focus is not to depict the flowers realistically with defined edges but to imply the shape and texture of petals blowing in the breeze.

Don’t forget to paint the sides of the canvas. You can paint the sides white, black or a complementary color but personally I love having my image wrap around the sides of the canvas so the viewer can see the image from all sides. The paintings look fabulous hanging as-is directly on the wall, a very contemporary look that suits any home décor. I use professional quality canvas mounted on 1-1/2” stretcher bars, so no framing is needed, although one can be added if desired.

I then sign the front and back of the painting.

Several days (or weeks later, depending on how thick the paint is applied) once the painting is completely dry, I use a professional quality gloss varnish to protect the painting from dust, dirt and UV rays.
